Second Meeting of the AI-HUB@LMU Steering Committee
The Steering Committee of the AI-HUB@LMU comprising representatives from all 18 faculties of LMU has convened for the second time. Some topics of the meeting were the donation from the Münchener Universitätsgesellschaft for a student position for media presence and for two major AI-HUB@LMU Awards, as well as the planning of a grand opening of the AI-HUB@LMU and further next events, a data base for AI researchers at LMU, and the current financial situation. The next meeting of the Steering Committee is scheduled for November 27, 2024.

Prof. Frauke Kreuter Elected as President of AAPOR
Prof. Dr. Frauke Kreuter has been elected as the 2023-2024 Vice President/President of the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR). AAPOR is a leading organization for public opinion and survey research professionals in the U.S., encompassing members from various sectors including academia, media, government, nonprofits, and private industry.

relAI Retreat
The recent relAI retreat in Miesbach was a three-day event that gathered over 50 fellows and students, featuring discussions, keynotes, and activities on AI reliability. Highlights included presentations by Prof. Dr. Solveig Vieluf, Prof. Dr. Matthias Althoff, Prof. Dr. Mathias Drton, and Prof. Dr. Stefan Feuerriegel, covering topics like AI-based telemonitoring, safe reinforcement learning, and causal ML. The event also incorporated an unconference format for group discussions on AI challenges and program improvements. This retreat has built strong connections among participants from TUM and LMU.

MCML Munich AI Day Recap
The first Munich AI Day, held on July 4, 2024, featured the latest AI developments and research. Organized by MCML, the event presented keynotes from notable speakers like Prof. Dr. Michal Irani and Prof. Dr. Mihaela van der Schaar, and included discussions on AI's applications in medicine, autonomous driving, and ensuring AI safety and reliability. The event facilitated interactions between researchers, industry representatives, and policymakers. Attendees also explored various booths and posters highlighting ongoing AI research and potential collaborations.

Call for Proposals: AI-HUB@LMU Prize for the Most Innovative Research Project
The AI-HUB@LMU is pleased to announce the AI-HUB@LMU Prize for the Most Innovative AI-based Research Project aiming to support groundbreaking research in the field of Artifical Intelligence. 3,000 Euros will be awarded for the project and 2,000 Euros for related costs. Eligible candidates include all scientific staff at LMU, with preferential consideration for early career researchers. Proposals should be up to 4 pages, with a separate budget page, and can be uploaded here until August 31, 2024. Winners will be announced on October 15, 2024. The project must start on December 1, 2024 at the latest.

The AI-HUB@LMU is excited to invite submissions for the Best Master's Thesis in the Field of AI, recognizing outstanding master’s theses completed between May 31, 2023, and May 31, 2024, at LMU. The theses will be evaluated based on their relevance, excellence, innovation, and contribution to the field of Artificial Intelligence. Required documents compiled in one PDF file can be uploaded here until August 31, 2024.

Auditing Fairness under Unobserved Confounding
In the scope of the AI Keynote Series organized by the Institute of AI in Management, Prof. Dr. Michael Oberst from Johns Hopkins University will give a talk about "Auditing Fairness under Unobserved Confounding". The event is scheduled for 16:00 pm on Thursday, August 8, 2024, and will be held online via Zoom. It will address how inequities in resource allocation can be assessed even when not all relevant indicators of need are observed. This talk is the last one of the series, which is a joint initiative, led by LMU (Prof. Dr. Stefan Feuerriegel) together with co-hosts from leading national universities.

MCML AI Ethics Conference
The Ethics of Generative AI & Conversational Agents conference will be held on September 12&13, 2024, at LMU, Department of Philosophy. This event, organized by LMU's AI ethics research group and the Munich Center for Machine Learning (MCML), will gather academic researchers and AI ethics practitioners. The conference will explore ethical issues related to generative AI and conversational agents, with a focus on the challenges these technologies pose in industrial settings.
