Appointment of Prof. Dr. Barbara Plank

Prof. Dr. Barbara Plank has been appointed as the new Bavarian AI Chair of AI and Computational Linguistics at the Faculty of Languages and Literatures. She leads a research lab in Natural Language Processing (NLP) at the Center for Information and Language Processing (CIS), is a professor (part-time) at ITU (IT University of Copenhagen), and also co-leads NLP North.

Appointment of Prof. Christopher Donkin, Ph.D.

Prof. Christopher Donkin, Ph.D. has been appointed as the new Bavarian AI Chair for Computational Modeling in Psychology at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences.  In his research he is interested in cognitive psychology, particularly in developing and testing computational and mathematical models of cognitive processes. He joins from the University of New South Wales in Australia.

Understanding Sorbian

How do you translate a language you don’t know? In some cases there is only a small amount of what you would call parallel data: exact translations of sentences, grammar, equivalent words. This complicates the work of computer scientists like Prof. Dr. Alexander Fraser from the Center for Information and Language  Processing at LMU Munich. Using his ERC Starting Grant, Fraser studied languages without parallel data.

AI Keynotes Summer Semester 2022

The Institute of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Management is again running the AI Keynotes series this summer semester. The weekly sessions on Thursdays aim to give an overview of current trends in AI research and consist of presentation, followed by discussion, feedback and Q&A. All sessions are also available via Zoom.

The series is a joint initiative, led by LMU Munich (Prof. Dr. Stefan Feuerriegel) together with co-hosts from leading national universities all over the world.

AIM@LMU Ringvorlesung

The AIM@LMU Ringvorlesung by the Chair of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning will feature five speakers in June: Prof. Dr. Daniel Gruen on "Artificial Intelligence for cosmological insights" (01.06.), Prof. Dr. Gitta Kutyniok about "Towards Reliable AI: The Impact of Mathematics" (08.06.), Prof. Dr. Barbara Plank (15.06), Prof. Dr. Mario Haim about "AI and News Online: Production, Distribution and Use" (22.06.) and Dr. Chiara Gianoli  about "AI in Medical Physics" (29.06.)

German Data Science Days

Data science plays a major role in science, industry, and business, and close collaboration between all parties involved is necessary. The German Data Science Days (GDSD) offer the ideal platform to foster such collaboration, bringing together data scientists from various fields to create a forum for users and experts. The aim of the event is to identify and discuss new methods and fields of application and, moreover, to enhance the professional image of data scientists.

The German Data Science Days are organized by the elite master programme “Data Science” at LMU München in cooperation with the German Data Science Society (GDS) e.V.
