Artificial intelligence (AI) facilitates better control of global development aid

A team of AI experts led by Prof. Dr. Stefan Feuerriegel, head of the LMU Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Management, is ensuring greater transparency in global development aid. The researchers have developed an artificial intelligence system that categorizes aid projects more comprehensively than it was possible up to now and facilitates better monitoring of these projects. This approach can help policy institutions make evidence-based decisions in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

AI can improve teacher training

During their studies, pre-service teachers often lack the opportunity to gain sufficient practical experience. Combining simulations with artificial intelligence can be a promising way to give a more hands-on edge to the skills they learn. This is the conclusion reached by a study conducted by Prof. Dr. Frank Fischer, Professor for Education and Educational Psychology at LMU Munich, and Dr. Michael Sailer. The study appears in the latest edition of the journal Learning and Instruction.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Symposium on AI Research at LMU

In order to expand the research network on artificial intelligence in Bavaria, 100 new AI chairs were established across the state. Seven of them went to the LMU. The newly appointed Bavarian AI chair holders at LMU, namely Chris Donkin, Stefan Feuerriegel, Daniel Grün, Eyke Hüllermeier, James Kirby, Gitta Kutyniok, and Björn Ommer, will introduce themselves and their research at this symposium, which takes place on June 1, 18:30 in the Große Aula of LMU. A panel will then discuss the next generation of AI research from the different disciplinary perspectives.

2022 Arnold Sommerfeld School

The Arnold Sommerfeld Center for Theoretical Physics at the LMU in Munich will host a school on “Physics meets Artificial Intelligence” in the period September 12-16, 2022. The school is primarily aimed at PhD students. It will cover applications of machine learning to different fields of physics, as well as theoretical aspects of machine learning. The format will be a mix of review and specialized talks, interspersed with hands on exercises and a poster session where the students can present their work.

Artificial intelligence in the radiotherapy workflow

The next iteration of the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence seminar series at the Medical Faculty seminar will take place on Friday April 29th at 10:00. Prof. Dr. Guillaume Landry (Image guided radiation therapy, Klinik und Poliklinik für Strahlentherapie und Radioonkologie am LMU Klinikum) will give a talk about Artificial intelligence in the radiotherapy workflow.

Inaugural Munich AI Lecture with Prof. Dr. Cynthia Dwork

The Munich AI Lectures will host their inaugural lecture on 4 May.

Prof. Dr. Cynthia Dwork will give a talk titled "Fairness, Randomness, and the Crystal Ball" followed by a Q&A. The lecture series is a joint initiative of the Munich Center for Machine Learning, the Center for Advanced Studies at LMU, the Munich Data Science Institute at TUM, and ELLIS Munich.

AIM@LMU Ringvorlesung

The interdisciplinary lecture series "AI in Science and Society" („KI in Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft“), in which the social relevance of AI and the importance of AI in different scientific fields are to be examined, is one component of the planned new Minor "AI as a major Minor", coordinated by Prof. Dr. Eyke Hüllermeier, Chair of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Although the range of courses is still being prepared, we would like to offer this lecture as a trial in the coming summer semester. The lecture will take place either in person or online, Wednesdays from 15:00 to 17:00. The lecture series is open to all members of the LMU community.
